O'Horten

To be shown on the Elks Theatre's big screen, 6:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 29th. Presented by the Voices of the Heartland Independent Film Society. All seats $5.00.

SYNOPSIS:

A bittersweet whimsy by the Norwegian director Bent Hamer.....deadpan, thought-provoking comedy at its best. Those who remember the flavor of "Kitchen Stories" in our film series a few years ago will recognize the director's style. It is about a retiring railroad engineer named Odd Horten. ( "Odd" is a common enough first name in Norway, but reflect that English is widely used in Scandinavia). O'Horten is a quiet, reflective man, a pipe-smoker, who lives alone but is not lonely and sets his life by the railroad timetable. He is baffled by retirement. He's not sure when he should be anywhere. Left to his own devices, he allows himself to be led into a series of remarkable circumstances.

REVIEWERS' COMMENTS:

"Pointedly strange and whimsical, O'Horten mixes the surreal with the mundane in its depiction of the retirement and eventual rebirth of a train engineer."--Tom Long, DETROIT NEWS

Papers

cherry blossomsTo be shown 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sep. 27th on the Elks Theatre's big screen. An open discussion will follow the show. All seats $5.00. Ticket receipts beyond expenses will be contributed to SD Peace and Justice.

NOTE: This month's film will be a joint presentation of the Black Hills chapter of South Dakota Peace and Justice along with the Voices of the Heartland. The movie "Papers" addresses a topic which Peace and Justice has chosen as its theme issue for this year, namely the status of immigrants in our society and the need for reform of our immigration laws. P&J has coordinated similar programs throughout the state in recent weeks, with the hope of stimulating thought and discussion on this important topic. The fact that some of our state government leaders have endorsed Arizona's new immigrant-targeting legislation points up the political currency of the issue, even in a state like SD with relatively few recent immigrants.

SYNOPSIS:

Imagine if you did not have the right to live in the country where you grew up. Imagine that you couldn’t work or drive. Imagine you couldn’t apply for a state ID or get on an airplane. Imagine you could be deported to a country you don’t remember. These are some of the obstacles undocumented immigrant youth face when they graduate from high school. “Papers” is the story of undocumented youth and the challenges they face as they turn 18 without legal status.

Papers the Movie: Stories of Undocumented Youth delivers the poignant stories of five undocumented students whose life in the United States is colored daily by their lack “papers.” Without proof of their immigrant status, it is against the law for them to drive or work, and it is difficult or impossible for them to get into college. Each year 65,000 such students graduate high school, kids who often can’t remember the countries where they were born, kids who have grown up American, yet only 5% of those go on to college. Some are afraid that applying would put them and their families at risk of deportation, and federal financial aid is not available to these students.

Only ten states allow undocumented students to pay the lower cost, resident tuition. The other forty require they pay the out-of-state tuition, something beyond the financial reach of most. And even if they graduate college, they have no legal employment options available to them.

Papers puts faces and stories to the 2 million undocumented students in the United States, showing their struggles and the frustrations of their teachers and politicians who are working for immigration reform which could allow these students access to American dream.

SYNOPSIS:

Celebrated director Doris Dorrie’s “Cherry Blossoms” concerns the enriching odyssey of life lived after the cruel death of a loved one, tracing that psychological abyss for a German man at ease with his habitual life and now confronted with cataclysmic change. Showing unexpected imagination, he is moved to live out his wife's dream of traveling to Japan and experiencing a local form of interpretive dance. Endearing, and basted with just enough culture shock oddity to keep the cinematic brew tart and curious, “Blossoms” is an emotionally charged pearl of a film.

Delicatessen

delicatessenTo be shown at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 26th at the Elks Theatre. All seats $5.00.

SYNOPSIS:

Somewhere in the mist-shrouded future of France, Louison (Pinon), a grieving ex-clown takes a job as janitor in a crumbling apartment block. Unbeknown to him, this job has a history and previous incumbents have ended up on the neighbour's dinner table via the butcher's block. When Louison innocently falls for the butcher's myopic daughter, the knife is held back to spare her feelings. But as bellies begin to rumble, will love be enough to keep Louison out of le charcuterie?

This troubled romance provides the bare skeleton on which Jeunet and Caro hang their dreams. A hugely enjoyable film, "Delicatessen" welds comedy and magic into a bizarre, grotesque fantasy of an oddball dystopian future.

The directors are constantly playing curveball with the audience's expectations and nothing can prepare you for the sheer weirdness of it all. Every so often, the plot stops to watch a scene spiral off at a tangent, such as a rhythm of creaking beds rippling out through the hotel, or two boys spying on a old man breeding escargots in his flooded apartment.

Combining the cruel humour of Grimm's fairy stories, with the spirit of Terry Gilliam and that peculiarly French knack of putting magic into film, this feverish tale of star-crossed lovers and small town cannibalism has endured as a true masterpiece of the fantastique. With "Delicatessen", Jeunet and Caro gave the world a canny and confident calling card for that most coveted of talents - commercial arthouse cinema. Brilliant. (from Matt Ford, BBC movie reviews)

OTHER REVIEWERS' COMMENTS:

Capitalism posterTo be shown on the Elks Theatre's big screen, 6:30 p.m., Monday, June 28th by the Voices of the Heartland Independent Film Society. An open discussion will follow the film. All seats $5.00.

SYNOPSIS:

With the financial collapse of 2007-2010, some would say that we are witnessing the predictable, self-destructive final chapter of capitalism, where greed has replaced or subverted other social values. Are there viable, alternative ways of organizing an economy? Michael Moore presents examples of US worker-owned enterprises, grassroots community organizations stopping bank foreclosures, and political leaders advocating ways of redistributing wealth and power. The film investigates the moral questions posed by an economics based on predation, and an ever-widening gulf between the clout of the "haves" and "have-nots". Is this system really enshrined in the US Constitution? How do religious authorities deal with the inherent paradoxes?

"Moore has always stood proudly for progressivism, and that works in his favor now."--Michael Sragow, BALTIMORE SUN

Occupation 101

To be shown on the Elks Theatre's big screen, 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 31st. A panel discussion is planned to follow the film. All seats $5.00.

SYNOPSIS:

A thought-provoking and powerful documentary film on the current and historical root causes of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Unlike any other film ever produced on the conflict -- 'Occupation 101' presents a comprehensive analysis of the facts surrounding the controversy and dispels many of its long-perceived myths and misconceptions.

The film also details life under Israeli military rule, the role of the United States in the conflict, and the major obstacles that stand in the way of a lasting and viable peace. The roots of the conflict are explained through first-hand on-the-ground experiences from leading Middle East scholars, peace activists, journalists, religious leaders (including several rabbis) and humanitarian workers whose insights have too often not been presented in American media outlets. Israeli and Palestinian viewpoints are expressed.

The film covers a wide range of topics -- which include -- the first wave of Jewish immigration from Europe in the 1880's, the 1920 tensions, the 1948 war, the 1967 war, the first Intifada of 1987, the Oslo Peace Process, Settlement expansion, the role of the United States Government, the second Intifada of 2000, the separation barrier and the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, as well as testimonials of victims from all sides of this tragedy.

This is an opportunity to fact-check your perceptions of an issue which continues to prove pivotal to the conflicts between the West and the Middle Eastern nations.

SYNOPSIS:

US Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film, DEPARTURES is a delightful journey into the heartland of Japan as well an astonishingly beautiful look at a sacred part of Japan's cultural heritage.

“Departures” follows Daigo Kobayashi (Masahiro Motoki), a devoted cellist in an orchestra that has just been dissolved and who is suddenly left without a job. Daigo decides to move back to his old hometown with his wife to look for work and start over. He answers a classified ad entitled “Departures” thinking it is an advertisement for a travel agency only to discover that the job is actually for a "Nokanshi" or "encoffineer," a funeral professional who prepares deceased bodies for burial and entry into the next life. While his wife and others despise the job, Daigo takes a certain pride in his work and begins to perfect the art of “Nokanshi,” acting as a gentle gatekeeper between life and death, between the departed and the family of the departed. The film follows his profound and sometimes comical journey with death as he uncovers the wonder, joy and meaning of life and living.

The Tiger and the Snow

The Tiger and The SnowTo be shown on the Elks Theatre's big screen at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 25th. All seats $5.00. An open discussion will follow the show.

SYNOPSIS:

In 1997's LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL, Roberto Benigni found international success by accomplishing the seemingly impossible task of making a moving comedy set during the Holocaust. Nearly a decade later, he similarly uses Dante's INFERNO as a template to mold a romantic comedy around the early days of the Iraq war. The result is truly unique, managing to find humor amid the horrors of war while mixing in elements of a sweet love story--with Benigni's trademark manic persona at the center of it all. Benigni is Attilio, a poet and professor at a university in Rome who has recurring dreams in which he is to be married to a beautiful and mysterious woman. After attending a lecture by his friend, the visiting Iraqi poet Fuad (Jean Reno, THE PROFESSIONAL), Attilio finally sees the woman of his dreams in the form of Vittoria (Benigni's real-life wife, Nicoletta Braschi), a writer doing research for a book on Fuad. Vittoria resists Attilio's fawning attempts to seduce her before returning to Iraq with Fuad, where she suffers a head injury that leaves her unconscious in a bomb-damaged hospital. Fuad informs Attilio of her condition, prompting the lovesick poet to join the Red Cross to gain entrance to war-torn Baghdad. Learning that the hospital is severely lacking in supplies, Attilio makes his way through the equivalent of several circles of Hell to find medicine for his dream woman--encountering mine fields, directionally challenged camels, and suspicious American soldiers. Bizarre and bold, THE TIGER AND THE SNOW manages to once again showcase Benigni as one of the world's most innovative comic talents. Dreamlike, yet still effectively using moments of horror to convey a heartfelt antiwar message, the film also finds plenty of space for his affably hyperactive presence.

REVIEWERS' COMMENTS:

"...writer-director Roberto Benigni ... uses the backdrop of war to validate the resilience of the human spirit..."---Michael Rechtshaffen, THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
